The Ruitao Patent column continues to interpret authorized patents of Ruitao Plastic Group. In the previous issue, we focused on marine special equipment and introduced the invention patent for stealth mine housings. In this issue, we turn to municipal landscape traffic security and discuss a utility model patent for imitation-stone plastic bollards that balances landscape aesthetics and collision safety.
Patent Name: An Imitation-Stone Plastic Bollard
Patent No.: ZL 2016 2 1410838.9
For traffic separation scenarios such as municipal roads, cultural tourism scenic spots, commercial plazas and industrial parks, bollards are core facilities to control vehicle boundaries and protect pedestrian zones. Granite and other natural stones are widely adopted for traditional bollards. However, the industry has long been plagued by tough problems in production, transportation, installation and long-term operation & maintenance:
▫️ High handling and installation cost: Natural stone features high density and heavy weight. A single finished piece can weigh hundreds of kilograms. Lifting equipment and multiple workers are required for delivery, positioning and relocation, leading to long construction cycles and high labor & machinery costs.
▫️ Brittle and easy to crack upon impact: Stone is a rigid brittle material. Once hit by vehicles, it is prone to chipping and breaking. Sharp broken fragments may scratch vehicles or even cause secondary injuries to pedestrians. Damaged components can hardly be repaired and must be replaced entirely.
▫️ Unfriendly production process: Stone mining damages mountain ecology, and cutting & polishing generates massive dust and noise pollution. Complex curved surfaces and customized special shapes come with high processing costs, limiting design flexibility for projects.
▫️ Difficult balance between landscape effect and function: Ordinary cement or plastic bollards have plain and rough surfaces, which hardly match the overall design style of scenic spots, high-end commercial streets and urban landscape belts. To get a natural stone look, buyers have to bear the high costs and safety risks of stone materials.
▫️ Poor flexibility for fixation and adjustment: Heavy stone bollards are hard to move after placement. When parks or commercial areas need to adjust pedestrian and vehicle routes, relocation and reconstruction involve heavy workload.
To tackle these industry pain points, the R&D team of Ruitao Plastic Group developed this separable and assembled plastic bollard with in-situ imitation-stone texture based on mature polyethylene rotational molding technology, and obtained the utility model patent authorization.Core Technical Highlights of This Patent
✅ Integrated imitation-stone texture formed by mold without secondary painting. Stone textures are directly reproduced during rotational molding. The patterns are uniform and stable with no peeling or fading of post-sprayed paint. The landscape appearance can be well maintained under long-term outdoor exposure to sunlight and rain.
✅ Separable threaded assembly structure with adjustable counterweight. The hollow base cavity can be filled with sand and gravel to adjust the total weight as required. It balances lightweight transportation and anti-impact limiting performance after placement. Threaded connection enables easy disassembly of the housing for inspection and replacement.
✅ PE rotational molding substrate with toughness for buffer and collision resistance. Different from brittle stone, PE material has inherent toughness. It can absorb part of impact energy during vehicle collision to reduce damage to vehicles. No sharp flying debris will be generated, greatly lowering on-site safety risks.
✅ Lightweight split design to reduce construction barriers. The housing and base are transported separately. The weight of a single part is far lower than granite bollards. One worker can finish handling and positioning without large lifting equipment, shortening the on-site construction period.
✅ High forming freedom and rich shape options. Leveraging the advantages of rotational molding, spherical, cylindrical and special landscape shapes are available. The outline and size can be quickly adjusted according to project plans to meet landscape design demands of different scenarios. PE material is recyclable for regeneration after scrapping, which is greener and low-carbon compared with natural stone.Applicable ScenariosScenario 1: Isolation of municipal roads and sidewalks
Used for pedestrian and vehicle separation on urban pedestrian streets, non-motorized lanes and landscape roads as a substitute for traditional granite bollards. The lightweight structure simplifies road renovation construction. Its flexible anti-collision performance eliminates hidden dangers of stone fragments caused by vehicle scratches. The imitation-stone appearance matches the urban landscape style, ideal for urban renewal projects.
Scenario 2: Pedestrian-vehicle separation in scenic spots and urban parks
Boundary control for pedestrian paths, lakeside parks and leisure squares in scenic areas. While blocking vehicles from entering pedestrian zones, its stone-like appearance blends well into natural scenery without breaking the garden atmosphere. The bollards can be quickly disassembled and relocated when the sightseeing route of the scenic spot needs adjustment to adapt to dynamic operation requirements.
Scenario 3: Commercial complexes and high-end pedestrian streets
Pedestrian-vehicle separation at plaza frontages of shopping malls, underground garage entrances and commercial pedestrian streets. It satisfies the dual requirements of appearance and safety for commercial projects. Compared with stone products, the replacement cost after collision damage is lower, helping commercial real estate cut operation and maintenance budgets.
Scenario 4: Vehicle limiting protection in industrial parks and logistics bases
Vehicle limiting at entrances and internal roads of factories, warehouses and logistics parks. The counterweight of the base can be adjusted according to security requirements to protect against passenger cars and trucks in the factory area. Components are easy to assemble and disassemble. Bollards can be repositioned and reused quickly when the park plan and passage layout are modified.
Scenario 5: Pedestrian zone protection in residential and healthcare communities
Pedestrian-vehicle separation on walkways and leisure squares of residential quarters and healthcare communities. The flexible anti-collision property reduces personal and property losses caused by accidental vehicle impact. Its plain stone-mimic appearance harmonizes with community green landscapes. The lightweight feature also reduces labor costs for property maintenance and replacement.Core Values for Customers
🔹 Balanced landscape appearance and safety performance, breaking the trade-off dilemma in the industry. There is no need to sacrifice aesthetics for plastic products, nor bear the high risks and costs of stone materials. One product meets landscape design and traffic security requirements at the same time, suitable for various landscape bidding projects.
🔹 Greatly reduced full-lifecycle project cost. It saves expenses for stone hoisting and large equipment rental in the early stage, with less labor input for on-site installation. The product will not shatter completely after impact. Only the outer shell can be replaced separately if damaged, instead of scrapping the whole unit, which significantly cuts later maintenance and replacement costs.
🔹 Flexible installation and layout to adapt to dynamic adjustments. The split threaded assembly structure facilitates transportation, delivery and positioning. The counterweight of the base can be increased or decreased on demand. Components can be disassembled, relocated and reused when route adjustment is needed later, improving asset utilization.
🔹 Stable outdoor weather resistance and less appearance maintenance. The imitation-stone texture is integrally formed by rotational molding without coating peeling risks. Polyethylene substrate is UV-resistant and rain-corrosion resistant, hardly fading or pulverizing under long outdoor service, reducing regular repainting and renovation work.
🔹 Eco-friendly to meet low-carbon project standards. Its production avoids dust pollution from stone mining. The plastic substrate can be recycled and regenerated after scrapping, making it easier to pass green construction and low-carbon procurement evaluation for municipal and landscape bidding projects.
